Pre Algebra (Period 2 & 4)

Review of First part of Chapter 1

Writing Algebraic Expression:

The product of a number and 7.
What does product mean? the answer to a multiplication problem
7n

The quotient of 4 and a number n
What does quotient mean?
division
4/n

The quotient of a number y and 4
y/4

Twice the sum of a number b and 10
What does twice mean? two times.
but this wants 2 times the SUM ) and sum means addition) so we need hugs
2(b + 10)

Five times the difference of 9 and an number y
now we need the difference ( which is subtraction) so we need hugs again
5(9-y)

Ten less than a number x
If this troubles you, think of a real number instead of x

ask yourself
how would you answer 10 less than 100? 100 -10
or 10 less than 50? 50 - 10
so
10 less than a number x would be x - 10

6 less than the quotient of x and 5.... similar but we need to write the quotient of x and 5 first
(x/5) - 6

Review September 14th notes for
The number of weeks in y years...
The number of minutes in s seconds
the number of gallons in q quarts

Remember to always put the unknown the w weeks, the s seconds, the q quarts on the left side of the T chart.
Fill in with at least 3 facts you know... and then ask yourself
What did you do to the left side to get the right side?
